The Royal Society, the UK's premier scientific body, is looking for an exceptional candidate to join its Grants Team to support excellence and innovation in UK science.


The Royal Society is the independent scientific academy of the UK dedicated to promoting excellence in science. Our UK Grants Section supports high calibre scientists from postdoctoral level to senior professorships and also offers funding opportunities for a variety of purposes ranging from innovation awards to the modernisation of laboratories. We are now looking for an outstanding and highly motivated candidates (preferably with a science degree), who will be responsible for managing part of the Royal Society's Grants portfolio. Through this work you will help us to deliver funding that enables the best scientific talent to excel and prosper and to apply their knowledge for the wider benefit of society.

You will have the opportunity to engage with Fellows of the Royal Society and help the Society invest in current and future leaders of science. This is an exciting opportunity to support cutting edge UK science and to work as part of a dynamic and creative team.

Science Policy Advisers

 

o   Salary: ca £26,000 depending on experience + benefits

The Royal Society, the UK's national science academy, is seeking two science policy advisers to work in its dynamic Science Policy Centre on a wide-range of policy issues relevant to the UK, EU and global policy-making communities.

The Policy Advisers will work predominantly on either research and innovation policy, or education policy.

Research and innovation policy will involve activities relating to the funding and governance of research, the relationship between science and government, and assessing the success of the UK in its goal to be a successful innovation led knowledge economy. The Policy Adviser will be working on a project which will monitor the health of the UK science base in the run up to the next Spending Review. This study will form the basis of discussion with Government, industry, academia and the broader community, on the role of science and innovation in fostering economic growth and the good of society. The Policy Adviser will work on a broad range of issues, undertaking research, drafting papers and reports, providing support to expert committees, organising events and developing and promoting the Society's policy positions.

Education policy will focus on delivery of the ambitions set out in the Society's new strategic plan, focusing in particular on a project to develop a vision for science and mathematics education. This ambitious new project sets out an evidence-based approach to building a world-class, high-performing education system for 5–19 year olds particularly in science and mathematics. Using international comparisons, the project will help ensure the UK has a scientifically and mathematically literate population as well as a skill set to help solve the many challenges the world faces in the coming decades. The Policy Adviser will support this timely project, helping to service a high-level advisory group, undertaking research, drafting papers and reports, organising events and developing and promoting the Society's policy positions.

Director, Science Policy Centre

 

o   As Director of the Science Policy Centre the post holder will give direction to the Society's policy work, and in doing so will work closely with domestic and overseas partners to deliver a range of programmes.

Influencing policy is a key priority in the Society's new strategic plan. One of the first priorities for the incoming Director will be to implement the policy elements of this strategy, and to help the Society realise its policy ambitions in the coming years. The Director of the Science Policy Centre plays an important leadership role within the Society, attends Board and Council meetings and is a key member of the Executive Director's senior team. S/he will be expected to contribute to the development of Society-wide policy and strategy.

This role demands a compelling mix of skills and attributes. The ability to command credibility with Ministers, senior officials and advisers, as well as leaders in the private sector, will be essential. The successful candidate will work effectively within Westminster and Whitehall, across the private sector and internationally; have established and effective networks; and be alert and responsive to key issues within academia and the wider science and innovation community.

The successful candidate must bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role and be flexible in dealing with changing priorities and a varied portfolio. S/he will report to the Executive Director and be expected to advise and have frequent contact with the Royal Society's President, Officers and senior Fellows. The Director must be adept at working 'behind the scenes', harnessing the expertise of the fellowship, as well as being a visible representative of the Society and its work.

Candidates, will be educated to degree level minimally; preferably in a scientific discipline, and will have proven ability to manage a team of highly qualified and self motivated staff together with an ability to work productively with a range of individuals and partners at very senior levels in the UK and overseas. Excellent communication, project management and general management skills are essential. Experience of living overseas and/or working in an international environment would be an advantage.
